From California to DC

Arriving in DC was an exciting experience filled with mixed emotions. It was my first visit, and I couldn’t wait to meet my cohort and the NAFHSA staff. As the daughter of Farmworkers, being an Intern in DC is not only a milestone for my family but for those individuals currently working in the fields in the hot sun. Having grown up in a small town, the transition to a busy city filled with tall buildings, busy metro lines, countless adventures, and new faces has filled me with excitement for what this summer has in store.

The first week has been lots of early mornings, new events, and meeting many professionals in the policy world like researchers, policymakers, and advocacy leaders. Our day at Capitol Hill has been the highlight of my experiences so far. It was a nerve-wracking yet exciting feeling to be part of such an impactful day for NAFHSA. Getting the opportunity to advocate for myself and my state, sharing my story with office staff, and receiving such positive feedback was truly rewarding. I felt warmly welcomed by my group and appreciated the kind words of encouragement from staff and parents. They really took me under their wing and guided me on how to navigate the meetings properly. Hearing the parents express their hope that their children will be in my position one day and reassuring them of their commitment and hopes for the NAFHSA was truly fulfilling.

Being alongside my cohorts has been awesome, as I’ve connected with them both professionally and personally. I was excited to finally meet Lizzet, my roommate and intern mate, it’s been a great few days shopping and cooking together. I’m looking forward to creating more memories with her and the rest of my cohort! I am looking forward to building a routine and working alongside my supervisor. I am also excited to cross off activities on my to-do list and experience the wonders DC has to offer.

I am glad to be in the Capital of the United States, representing my family and community. This is an experience that I once thought was impossible has become a reality, interning for an organization that I grew up admiring.
